Speed Racer

Mon May 12, 2008, 8:06 AM
How come nobody went to see this?!? Took the family on mother's day (my wife's idea :)). Saw it at the IMAX here in Orlando and I was blown away. My daughter (8 years old) loved it. and my son (4) enjoyed the race sequences but did get a little restless during the talking scenes. The movie was so much F-U-N! over the top in every way.

anyone see it? or not see it...what turned you off? since the first trailer I've been looking forward to this the most. My daughter and I both like Iron Man a lot, but Speed Racer was the one we talked about for longer. (I'd see speed again, before watching Iron Man again).

I understand it's definitely a kid's movie, so if you're an adult I can understand not wanting to see it by yourself in the theatre.
but so Alvin and the Chipmunks was a kids movie that did huge...which was utter crap that was so painful to sit thru that I fell asleep on it. :)

Oh, and during the movie I leaned over to my daughter and asked her if she knew who Racer X was under the mask. she thought for a second and said 'Neo?'. that got a big laugh out of me. :) (I never told her the same guys made the Matrix...but I've let her see some scenes from those movies...mostly the fight scenes :))

And i'm not some nostalgia freak, I hated the Speed Racer cartoon as a kid with a passion. poorly drawn and I was never into cars as a kid, plus Speed seemed like a bit of a pansy. but man, I had a blast! Plus driving home from the theatre was fun...I so badly wanted to flip the car over a few times and go 800 mph...but had to settle for changing lanes with my own supplied sound fx. :)

(and IMAX is the only way to see this movie..or any movie! If you don't have one near you, time to move! :))

i completely agree! Speed was a fantastic movie (which i'm going to see again next weekend with my girlfriend)! i loved to cartoon as a kid but i couldn't for the life of me understand why there were only 8 of us in the theatre :(

glad someone else agrees that the reviews are total crap!

I haven't seen it yet.
I like the pretty colors though!

I didn't think that it was true to the speed racer cartoon. I wouldn't have minded the new super high tech, way over the top look... but it didn't remind me of the cartoon at all, and I don’t' like the guy who played speed racer. My biggest reason for not going was because the monkey they used for the movie was continuously beaten off camera when it didn't do exactly what they wanted. As an animal activist... I wish they would have used a 3D monkey... because it's rare that a wild animal doesn't get beaten when they do not behave in the way they are expected to.

I saw the movie and thought it was insane, but in the best ways possible. My friends went along with me, and though they had little to no knowledge of the original it was still fun for them.

I liked the old cartoon as a kid, but now it's pretty hard to watch, so seeing an upgrade was definitely not a bad thing to do.
1) Never seen the cartoon
2) Always hated badly dubbed Animé even if it is old and therefore nostalgic and therefore good
3) Hated the Matrix Sequels
4) Didn't even think the first one was all that great
5) Didn't see V for Vendetta, actively avoided seeing it in fact. Took measures that some might call extreme to make sure I never had to sit through it. It looked so awful, and everyone who said they liked it made it sound even worse.
6) Squelch

When I first saw the trailers for the movie I was a little worried that they were being too literal to the cartoon. Now I did love the cartoon when I was little, yeah it was poorly drawn and very crude, but it had fancy cars and was cool. But I went in as I do with every movie I've seen in the past ten years, with little expectation; it keeps me from being too disappointed. And then when I saw the first non-racing scene and they had background with all the solid colors I was like "oh, no, not another Dick Tracy." But by the time the first race and all the flashbacks that set the movie up were over, I was into it. The characters were true and the cast played them straight forward. Sprittle and Chim-Chim moments were the only thing that really took me out of the movie (but they do serve the children during the more talkie moments). And the racing scenes were fantastic. They took what the Mach 5 could do in the anime and amped it up. They certainly didn't need the Car Acrobatic Team since all the cars could do acrobatics.

So I really enjoyed the movie. I can understand some of the negative reviews, but most of them seem to be coming from people who haven't even seen it. Had they done the movie completely in CGI or anime I doubt there would be any negative reviews. And the funniest negative reviews I've read were the ones that say it's nothing like the cartoon :omg:

So I would defintely reccommend it to anyone.

I'm disappointed to learn that it hasn't done so well at the box office. I can understand how some people might have been turned off by the style, and I wasn't sure what to think myself when I first saw the trailer, but I actually quite enjoyed the movie, possibly more than Iron Man even. I only saw the anime a few years ago, and was surprised by how much I liked it. This was a way bigger cartoon than the cartoon ever was, though. I think I might have really loved it if I were a little younger or less dead inside. Still, I had a fun time, and will probably go to see it again. I think kids might have a hard time following aspects of the plot, since I wasn't sure what was going on part of the time myself, but it's just a cool movie to look at. I feared Spritle was going to be a really annoying character, but weirdly enough, he actually turned out to be one of my favorite parts of the movie. I'd call one of the Wachowskis' greatest acheivements, taking a spazzy, hyper kid, and somehow making him someone I don't want to strangle.
I've gotta say that from the look of the commrecials, the movie looks like crap. All of the scenes with the garish glowing neon lights in the race track scenes remind me of the shitty Joel Schumaker Batman & Robin Movie with George Clooney. SpeedRacer looks obscenely colorful. I for one think that this movie is going to be one big steaming pile of dog turd.
I saw it opening night in a packed theatre and even though the CG was a little jarring at first (when he first steps out of the school and you see Rex across the street), I soon got into it and had a fun time. I wasn't expecting anything incredible; just some cheesy fun, and that's what I got.

For me, though, Indiana Jones is the most anticipated movie this summer. CAN'T wait.

I saw it, and really enjoyed it.

You have to be young, or at least young at heart to like it. I don't know who I can even recommend it to besides other artists or animators.

But it delivered on everything it promised to, so I don't know why there's been such a negative reaction...
